Sacramental Preparation

At SS John & Monica Catholic Primary School, the preparation and celebration of the Sacraments are an important part of our Catholic life and mission. We work closely with our parish, SS John & Martin's, and our families to support children on their journey of faith, helping them to develop a deeper understanding of God's love and their relationship with Him.

As part of their faith journey, baptised Catholic children have the opportunity to receive the following Sacraments:

  • Sacrament of Reconciliation – Year 3

  • First Holy Communion (Eucharist) – Year 3

  • Sacrament of Confirmation – Years 5 and 6 (two-year rolling programme)

Sacramental preparation is a shared responsibility between the school, parish and home. Parents and carers are encouraged to play an active role by attending preparation meetings, special Masses and celebrations, supporting their children as they take these important steps in their Catholic faith.

Sacrament of Reconciliation

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is an important milestone in a child's spiritual development and is celebrated by baptised Catholic children in Year 3, prior to receiving their First Holy Communion.

Through preparation in school and the parish, children develop an understanding of God's unconditional love, mercy and forgiveness. They learn the importance of recognising when they have made wrong choices, expressing genuine sorrow and seeking forgiveness.

Children are encouraged to reflect upon their actions, understand the importance of making positive choices and recognise that God's love and forgiveness are always available to them.

Sacrament of the Eucharist – First Holy Communion

The celebration of First Holy Communion is a particularly special occasion in the faith journey of our Catholic children.

In Year 3, children are prepared to receive Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time, developing their understanding of the significance of the Last Supper, the Mass and the real presence of Christ in Holy Communion.

Preparation takes place through a close partnership between school, parish and families. Children participate in dedicated learning and prayer opportunities, while parents and carers are invited to preparation meetings and special Masses at SS John & Martin's Church.

These experiences help children and their families deepen their faith and appreciate the significance of receiving the Eucharist as part of the Catholic community.

Sacrament of Confirmation

The Sacrament of Confirmation is celebrated by our Catholic children in Years 5 and 6 through a two-year rolling programme, with the celebration taking place every two years.

Confirmation marks an important stage in a young person's faith journey, strengthening the grace received at Baptism and encouraging children to live as committed followers of Jesus Christ.

Through their preparation, children develop a deeper understanding of the Holy Spirit and the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord (wonder and awe).

Children are encouraged to consider how they can use these gifts in their everyday lives, demonstrating kindness, compassion, courage and service to others.

We work closely with our parish and our sister school, St Martin de Porres Catholic Primary School, to support the preparation and celebration of the Sacraments, strengthening the bonds within our wider Catholic community.

At SS John & Monica's, we recognise that sacramental preparation extends beyond the classroom. Through prayer, worship, participation in parish life and the example of those around them, children are supported in developing a living and lasting faith.
