Collective Worship at SS John & Monica's
Collective Worship is an act that is legally required to take place every school day and
‘shall be wholly or mainly of a broadly Christian character’.
At Ss John & Monica Catholic Primary School we have many types of Collective Worship each week – children will have class assemblies, prayer services in class, whole school assemblies, SEAL and Golden Book assemblies and very importantly our weekly school Mass. All of our opportunities for Collective Worship make sure that children have time to think about their life and the world around them, to pray and to share their feelings and emotions
Children in each class learn the prayers for their age group so that they can participate in acts of collective worship and understand why we do certain things during prayer in the Catholic faith. All pupils at SS John & Monica’s share our special Masses by reading, singing, praying and acting. All of our class assemblies have a religious or moral story as the starting point with a message to help us to teach the children acceptable rules to live their lives by.
Fr Dominic explains the meaning of the Gospel so that we understand the message
As this is a Catholic school we do not have acts of collective worship for other faith groups but we ensure that our children learn about the many religions in the world through their PSHE (Personal Social and Health Education) and Citizenship curriculum. Year 2 – 6 study the main celebrations and events of one major world religion in their class and to help children understand them in a better way we visit places of worship such as Synagogues and Temples and also have visitors who can share their stories of life as a member of each religion.
Our Parish Church is St John & St Martin’s on George Street in Balsall Heath.
Our Parish Priest is Father Dominic
Father Dominic visits us every week to say Mass and also to help children who are preparing for their Sacraments – Reconciliation, First Holy Communion and Confirmation.

Our community in Balsall Heath and Moseley is a great mix of cultures and religions and we try to celebrate everyone’s special days in our school.
